The Husband has an unfortunate habit of referring to May as "Hell Month." That might be stretching it a little--but, there's no denying that May is usually the most difficult month of the year for our family.
It all started innocently enough. When we got married, I discovered that both the Husband and his Mother had their birthdays in mid-May. Of course, Mother's Day needed to be worked into the mix, and that left us with three things to celebrate in ten days. Fun, right? It was!
For a few years.
Then. the Daughter was born.
Six weeks early.
At the beginning of Finals Week, when I was still teaching.
--Five days before her Dad's birthday.
Now, we were at three birthdays and Mother's Day all within ten days.
As Husband and I both got into education, things got even more complicated. More finals in May, more testing in May, more.....well, more May.
This year, we've outdone ourselves. Even by our standards.
During the first weekend in May, we made a last-minute drive to California for the surprise birthday of a dear friend. (There and back in about 60 hours.) Two days later, our son graduated from Bible School out at the coast. Tragically, on Friday, our friends son was killed. The following Monday, our Son had two wisdom teeth removed. On Wednesday we half-heartedly celebrated the Daughter's birthday. That night, we found out that one of my dearest friends had a heart attack. The next day, I had to sign all the papers to close the rental house we purchased for my Mom. On Saturday, we attended the memorial service for my friend's son. The next day was Mother's Day.
Yesterday, the Husband's birthday passed without fanfare. We also discovered the Son's teeth had developed dry sockets--which explains why he has been up every night and in so much pain since last week. Today and Wed. we will accompany our daughter to two days of legal proceedings for the accident she was in. This Saturday, our adopted daughter graduates with her masters degree. Her "other" parents have invited us to the graduation ceremony and a big celebration dinner. On Sunday night, we will be hosting a huge graduation barbeque for her at our house, (that will also be the mother-in-law's birthday.)
That accounts for May 1st through 20th.
Next May?
It might make a great time to be out of town.
